St Albans CVS Funding Information and Advice Service is wholly funded by St Albans District Council to support voluntary and community groups in the district to be fundable, to access council grants and to secure as much external funding as possible.

In 09/10, we helped local groups secure £ 234,002 in funding from a variety of sources.

The following groups, to name but a few, have benefited recently from our help:

St Albans City Youth, SW Herts Samaritans, Bethany Community Church, the Polish Association of St Albans, Hertfordshire Asian Women’s Association.

St Albans City Youth made such good use of the service in 2010, we decided to award them a certificate! David Wray receives the award from Laura Cronshaw, Chief Executive of the CVS below:

1 HERTS CVS Find the Funding Newsletters

As a member group you will automatically be emailed 10 Find the Funding newsletters a year. These summarise current available funds and their deadlines. These newsletters were originally developed with the support of Hertfordshire County Council.

2 Funding Advice Network Briefing Sheets

You can also ask to receive a briefing sheet on local funders and on funders who fund work in specific service areas. These briefing sheets were also developed with the support of Hertfordshire County Council.

You can also get help to review or develop your fundraising strategy provided you have first completed (as best you can) and returned:

3 Help with Fundability
If you need help to improve your governance or management in order to be fundable, we can help with constitutions, legal forms, model policies etc. If you are starting from scratch, ask for a model document to get started. If you have an existing document, e mail it to us if you want our comments.

4 Help with Enterprise
If you want to increase your earned income, we can help you to identify what you have to sell and how to price it. If you are an existing registered charity, we can also advise you what is allowable in relation to trading.

St Albans CVS has a library of reference books for member groups and good practice guides on fundraising and other issues. Click here to access the list.

The Charities Information Bureau has a Funding Newsletter and good practice material.

The Institute of Fundraising sets the standard for good fundraising practice. Start as you mean to go on!

The NCVO Introductory Guide to Funding and Finance is a useful starter’s guide

NCVO Sustainable Funding Project has lots of useful information about diversifying income, trading and earning and loan funding.

The Charities Commission has guidance on Charities, trading and VAT and Charities and Public Service delivery while HMRC has good guides to tax and VAT for charities that trade and earn business income.

HMRC has the latest guidance on Tax efficient donations - Gift Aid Tax efficient donations – payroll giving,and giving via a legacy.

St Albans District Council has guidance on street and house to house collecting locally, and Comprehensive guidance about when charities can sell alcohol to raise funds, rules on lotteries, competitions and gaming etc.
